Ultraviolet (UV) light is a component of the electromagnetic spectrum that falls in the region between visible light and X-Rays. Deep ultraviolet, or UVC, refers to light with wavelengths between 200 to 280 nanometers (nm). It is used for inactivating the DNA of pathogens in many disinfection applications.

UVC LEDs are small devices that emit UVC light in order to destroy dangerous pathogens in water, surface, and air. Due to their small size, UVC LEDs are easily integrated into a wide range of products, such as water purification systems, medical devices, air purifiers, and more to provide effective disinfection.

The spectrum of light not visible to the human eye, ranging from 100 to 400 nm, can be classified into four separate regions:

100 nm to 200 nm – Far UV or vacuum UV (these wavelengths only propagates in a vacuum).

200 nm to 280 nmUVC, useful for disinfection, sterilization, water purification, and sensing with potential use in the treatment of beverages, disinfection of food surfaces, packaging, and other food contact and non-contact surfaces.

280 nm to 315 nmUVB, useful for curing, tanning, and medical applications like in biotechnology, dermatology, disinfection, and sterilization.

315 nm to 400 nmUVA (or “near UV”), useful for printing, lithography, sensing, harvest, growth, greenhouses, and medical applications. Industrial UVA LEDs can be used for UV curing applications.

Combination of UVC + UVA

Deep ultraviolet, or UVC, is used for inactivating the DNA of pathogens in many disinfection applications. The UV-A spectrum goes from 315 to 400 nanometers (nm), although it is commonly used on more industrial applications, UV-A LEDs in combination with UV-C, can prevent the DNA repair mechanisms of pathogens, inactivated with just UV-C treatment, to re-activate preventing treatment with UV-C to be less long-lasting. Repair enzymes are sensitive to higher UV wavelengths, when it comes to preventing DNA repair this is where UV-A stands out.

Highlights:

enlightenedCompact and Effective Design: UVC disinfection using LED technology remains the sole proven, practical, and cost-effective solution for addressing true microbial safety, germicidal mercury lamps have been the trusted UVC source; however, UVC LEDs are here to replace traditional mercury UVC lamps. The UVC LED technology, due to its compact dimensions, gives greater flexibility when it comes to the design and development of the new products, allowing innovative parts where the LED can last for the lifetime of the appliance.

enlightenedAir Purification: UVC LEDs can improve indoor air quality and decrease infections. On-demand operations to meet user needs and behaviors, compact, non-toxic, mercury-free, and portable product designs. As antibiotic-resistant microorganisms increase, UVC LEDs are becoming the method of choice to deliver on-demand solutions.

enlightenedSurface Disinfection: Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) is a disinfection method where UVC light is used to inactivate microorganisms leaving them unable to reproduce. It is a proven maintenance-free germicidal performance against spore-forming bacteria, with potential use in the treatment of beverages, disinfection of food surfaces, packaging, and other materials.

enlightenedWater Purification: UVC LEDs can be used in on-demand systems to protect families and homes from common pathogenic sources of waterborne illnesses. UVC LEDs are used in these systems to protect against microbial contaminants- including bacteria, viruses, and parasites.

enlightenedMultiple Applications: The use of UV light for disinfection is gaining popularity over chemical disinfection in various industries including healthcare, consumer appliances, food & beverage, and water labs. The increased popularity is due to the availability of long lifespan UVC LEDs and specific radiation spectra. UVC LEDs provide designers with a more effective germicidal light source.

enlightenedMercury lamps Vs. UVC LEDs: Low-pressure mercury lamps (fluorescent tubes) and high-pressure mercury lamps emit an almost monochromatic light with a wavelength of 253.7nm used for disinfection and sterilization. These lamps have a much broader spectral distribution that includes germicidal wavelengths. UVC LEDs can be manufactured to target very specific and narrow wavelengths. This allows solutions to be tailored down to the particular application needed at a lower cost and therefore more accessible costs to consumers.

Note:

All the parameters and technical values mentioned both on the web and in the technical sheets, are maximum values. They cannot be used for periods higher than 180 seconds at once but must be pressed at least halfway through their cycle in said parameters. Example: If the LED is used for 90 seconds, then it is recommended that the LED rest before being used at its maximum power for at least another 90 seconds. This includes a 180-second cycle with ½ cycle at full power and ½ rest cycle.

If you want to use the LED continuously for periods longer than 3 minutes (180 seconds), it is recommended to have an LED junction temperature below 140 °F or to work with a parameter range of at least 20 % below their maximum values.
